The IEEE Conference series on Human-Machine Systems (IEEE ICHMS)

The IEEE International Conference on Human-Machine Systems (ICHMS) is the annual meeting of the IEEE Human-Machine Systems community. The overarching goal of ICHMS is to convene researchers and practitioners in order to promote fundamental contribution in the area of human-machine systems. A focus of this conference is on transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary challenges, aspects that are not adequately covered by existing conferences in the field.

The ICHMS series was initiated 2019 by the IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society ( ICHMS strengthens the activities of the IEEE SMC Society in the Human-Machine Systems (HMS) area, and as such its technical activities are distinct from those in the Cybernetics and System Science areas, providing a clear focus for interested audiences. The conference is strongly supported by IEEE SMC Society Technical Committees in the HMS area (

Steering Committee

The steering committee, consisting of members who serve multi-year, staggered terms, stabilizes the development of the conference series. The steering committee oversees the selection process of the annual conference sites and ensures the overall technical and organizational quality by supervising establishment of the conference organization committees and the organizational processes. The steering committee meets during the annual conferences and as needed.

The committee consist of up to six elected members (elected for a three year period) and members by role (SMSC Vice President Human-Machine Systems, SMSC Vice President Conferences & Meetings and the General Chairs of the last two and the upcoming ICHMS conferences). Currently the members of the committee are:

  • Fei-Yue Wang, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China (SMSC VP Human-Machine Systems)
  • Andreas Nürnberger, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany (SMSC VP Conferences & Meetings)
  • Giancarlo Fortino, University of Calabria, Italy (General Chair IEEE ICHMS 2020)
  • David Mendonca, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA (2019-2022)
  • David Kaber, University of Florida, USA (2019-2022)
  • Chris Nemeth, Applied Research Associates, Inc. USA (2019-2022)

The committee members are elected during the annual meeting of the steering committee. The members of the committee must be IEEE SMCS members.
