The 2021 IEEE International Conference on Human-Machine Systems (ICHMS) will be held in Magdeburg, Germany as a hybrid event, allowing for both physical and virtual attendance. The conference theme is: Human Centered Systems for our Digital World.
ICHMS will provide a remarkable opportunity for the academic and industrial communities to address new challenges and share solutions, and discuss future research directions in the important area of Human-Machines Systems. ICHMS specifically covers contributions on research related to integrated human/machine systems at multiple scales, and includes areas such as human/machine interaction; cognitive ergonomics and engineering; assistive/companion technologies; human/machine system modeling, testing and evaluation; and fundamental issues of measurement and modeling of human-centered phenomena in engineered systems. The organization of ICHMS is based on the following Track types: Regular Track, Special Tracks and PhD Track.
The conference will also feature plenary speeches, panel sessions, tutorials, and poster sessions. Contributions are expected from academia, industry, and management agencies. All accepted papers will be published in conference proceedings and in IEEE Xplore.

The SI will serve as a forum for multidisciplinary and systematic research investigations presented at the 2nd ICHMS. This SI seeks high-quality and significant extensions of contributions to ICHMS 2021. Selected high quality submissions of the conference will be invited to submit to the SI. THMS has not previously published regular papers as extensions of conference proceeding publications. For this reason, any manuscript submitted to the present SI, and ultimately published in THMS, will be required to present an extension of a research study presented at the conference of no less than 40% new results, inferences and conclusions for the scientific community. THMS will consider both full regular papers and technical correspondences. More details can be found ind the CfP and here.

The main track is aimed at presenting significant research contributions that are of interest for a broader human-machine systems audience. The conference theme this year is: Human Centered Systems for our Digital World.
These tracks represent well-established “sub topics” of HMS – mainly driven by activities of the SMC Society HMS Technical Committees. The tracks are intended to collect contributions from the HMS community, focusing on topics such as Companion Technology, Brain-Machine Interfaces and Systems, Human-AI Interaction and Cognitive Computing & Engineering, Interactive and Wearable Computing and Systems, Collaborative Intelligent Systems and Applications and Human Factors Engineering. Each special track will be organized by one or two chair/s and all contributions will be reviewed, as regular papers, by the program committee. An open call for special tracks will enable research to enrich the conference program by inclusion of upcoming hot topics and gain visibility in their community. Proposers of special tracks will be expected to bring in an active group of researchers, supporting the track by either submitting contributions or by supporting the reviewing process.
This track (doctoral consortium) is intended to attract presentations of PhD projects and will ensure active participation of both, senior researchers and PhD students, in order to stimulate discussion. All senior researchers will provide feedback to the presenters during the track and one senior researcher per PhD student will provide individual feedback. The papers (full papers) of the track will be reviewed accordingly and selected papers will be published in the proceedings. To encourage feedback from the community, all presenters will also have the possibility to present their work in the form of a poster to conference participants during a poster session.

Emperor Otto the Great and Otto von Guericke left their mark on Magdeburg and are the namesakes of the City of Otto. Nowadays, the 1200-year-old metropolis by the river Elbe, which has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its history, is not only characterised by impressive historic medieval buildings, quaint Baroque façades and monumental districts from the “Gründerzeit” period, but also by its modern architecture.
The hosting University is named after Otto von Guericke (1602 - 1686), the renowned son of Magdeburg and well-known for his research on the vacuum.
